Sunrisers can today announce that Kelly Castle will be stepping down from the role of Captain, with Dané van Niekerk assuming the position. The former South African Captain will take the reins immediately, commencing with tonight’s Charlotte Edwards Cup clash in Hove against Southern Vipers.
The decision comes from a collective view that the side’s progress and development would benefit from a more experienced on-field leader, and in van Niekerk, Sunrisers have one of the most experienced and influential leaders in the world game.
Sunrisers Head Coach, Andy Tennant said:
“First of all, let me place on record my most sincere thanks to Kelly for the job she has done as Captain of Sunrisers. KC is an inspiration to so many aspiring young female cricketers and has captained this team with dignity, authenticity, and skill, and we are grateful to her for putting her heart and soul into the job.
“Our focus now turns to performing this evening, with a new Captain and an outstanding and well-respected former Captain in our ranks.”
All at Sunrisers would like to thank Kelly for the commitment that she has given to the captaincy since she took over in June 2021, and wish Dané and the team every success going forward.
