Sunrisers Head Coach Andy Tennant has selected a squad of fourteen to travel to Worcestershire for the opening Charlotte Edwards Cup game of the summer, against Central Sparks.
Lissy Macleod, Abtaha Maqsood, and Jess Olorenshaw all make the matchday squad for the first time this season. Maqsood returns after playing a key part in Scotland qualifying for the upcoming Women’s World Cup, whilst Macleod and Olorenshaw come in to provide strong short-format batting options.
Sunrisers have started the fifty over season in style, topping the table with four wins, and will be looking to replicate that sensational form in the shorter format.
Overseas signing Nic Hancock has already had a huge impact on the side, and will lead an exciting bowling unit that welcomes back Eva Gray. Hancock played in the WBBL final with Brisbane Heat over the winter, taking three wickets in the competition’s showpiece.
Sunday marks the first game of a new format for the regional women’s T20 competition, with ten group games to be played per side. This sees every team play each other once, with Sunrisers playing return fixtures against the three other southern teams. The top four will advance to Finals Day, to be played at Derbyshire’s Incora County Ground on Saturday 22 June.
Sunrisers beat Central Sparks by five wickets in the RHFT at the start of the month, where Hancock and Kate Coppack took three wickets each before Grace Scrivens scored 118*, and will be looking to complete another victory in the West Midlands.
Sparks will be without their England wicketkeeper Amy Jones, who will be in action for her country against Pakistan on Sunday. In captain Eve Jones, Issy Wong, Katie George, and overseas Courtney Webb they have an experienced core, and leg-spinner Hannah Baker has impressed in warm up matches.
The game starts at 2.30pm at New Road, Worcestershire. Tickets can be purchased on the gate at £5 for adults and £1 for U18.
If you can’t make it to the game, make sure you tune in to watch the free live stream during the day on Sparks’ YouTube channel, alongside updates on our social media channels. We wish a safe travel to those of you making the trip.
