Sunrisers are delighted to announce that Academy all-rounder Amu Surenkumar has been awarded her first Senior contract, ahead of the return of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.
At just 16 years of age, Surenkumar has been part of the Sunrisers Academy programme for three years showing huge potential with both bat and ball.
The young seamer plays county cricket for Middlesex, and recently made her maiden first team appearance in Tuesday’s warm-up match against Central Sparks at Radlett. Whilst she has earned her call up through her performances with the ball, she has been batting at three for the Academy so will provide a useful option with the bat as well.
The Sunrisers First Team squad will now feature eight Academy graduates, after Esmae MacGregor made her debut in our previous game – against Southern Vipers at Hove.
Sunrisers Regional Talent Manager, Luke Pomfret, is delighted for the youngster:
“It’s another proud moment for the Academy, with another player who has worked extremely hard earning the chance to make the step up to the Senior squad.
After Esmae’s impressive debut last month, it will be exciting to see Amu make the step up and produce performances that we have seen consistently for the past three seasons. I have no doubt that she will embrace the opportunity and throw herself right into the challenge.”
Head Coach Andy Tennant said:
“It’s a very exciting moment for Amu, who has shown a lot of maturity on the cricket pitch for a player at the very start of her career.
This is also a special time for all of those who have been involved in her development as a cricketer, and is the reward for a lot of hard work from everyone supporting Amu. She has settled into the squad well, and she knows many of them from the Academy set up, so we are excited to see how she can make her mark in professional cricket.”
Amu will be in contention to make her debut at Chelmsford this weekend, when we host Southern Vipers in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy at the Cloud County Ground. Click here for ticket information.
